The documentary play Grannies is based on the testimonies of poverty-stricken elderly women who survive by collecting plastic bottles in Rijeka, Croatia.
They are all around us in the city, but who are they? What are their life stories? What matters to them, what gives them strength? And how do they contribute to society, even if society does not see, count, or acknowledge it?
This is a play about labour, dignity, youth and old age, survival, and the lives of women over 65—and about all of us.
The authors of the play bonded with four women who had chosen the names: Albina, Marta, Suzana, and Ljudmila. They developed a play that intertwines these women's narratives with the stories of their own grandmothers and other women they know. The position of women is explored through the lens of social values such as social security, (in)equality, social inclusion, and right to dignified life.
At a time when it has become “normal” to pass by people digging through dumpsters, we ask ourselves where we stand and where we’re headed, as individuals and as a society.
Donations for the program booklet go directly to our collaborators who shared their life stories for the performance.
