The origin of the term “black sheep” comes from the world of shepherds and their flocks, where white-wool sheep were the most desirable because their wool could be dyed. When a black sheep appeared in the flock, it was generally despised because its BLACK WOOL did not meet expectations—it could not be dyed; it would always remain black and had to be accepted as it was.
Everything in this performance is true. Black Wool is a performance about homelessness. It is a performance about the dialogue between an individual and the system.
The beneficiaries of the Oaza Association for the Homeless and Socially Vulnerable in Rijeka are co-authors of this performance, along with the artists from Igralke Collective, direction and dramaturgy collaborator Olja Lozica, and Damir Urban, the author of the title song. Black Wool is an example of community theatre, which involves members of a specific community in the creation and performance of a professional production. Igralke, in their activist approach to collectively devised theatre, use theatre as a space for play, gathering, and a ritual of emancipation.
Elements of the set design, costumes, and props were purchased according to the needs of the participants and remained with them after the project ended.

The documentary film Black Wool by Rijeka-based filmmaker Mara Prpić follows the process of creating the stage performance of the same name, produced by Igralke Collective. The film documents the journey of the play—from its preparation and performances to its success, tours, and ultimately, its unforeseen end.
Like a spark that briefly lights up the darkness, Black Wool bears witness to the success of the documentary theatre piece and ensures its continuation. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the performance can no longer be staged, but the film preserves its legacy.
